The Far East Model UN was this week. Teenagers from all over the Pacific Region debated and deliberated in Yokosuka for three days and then yesterday they went to the American Embassy in Tokyo.
Matt represented North Korea at the practice session last fall. This time he played the role of a Non-Government Organization (NGO), XE Services, which he tells me is another name for the US Department of Defense contractor Blackwater.
Most Defense contractors I've seen appear to favor safari attire or Hawaiian shirts, but Matt insisted he absolutely had to wear a jacket and necktie every day. Figuring the electric guitar tie he's been slipping over his head ever since his dad knotted it a year ago was going to start wearing on other delegates' nerves by noon on Tuesday yet never having mastered tie knots myself, I stuffed some of Mike's ties into my pocket and sauntered over to Starbucks where a pair of accommodating strangers knotted them for Matt. They approached this task with amazing professionalism, grilling me on his height and the length of his torso before slipping the finished products over their heads. In yet another of life's little ironies, those men turned out to be DoD contractors. I couldn't help but notice they were wearing safari jackets.
I am fairly certain Matt enjoyed participating in the Model UN. He now has 50 pens bearing the Far East logo and a dresser top littered with dozens of scraps of paper hinting that he could beat Israel in a punctuation battle and that he approached his role much like one of his computer war games.
XES: Interpol investigations take an unreasonable amount of time.
Israel: What do you suggest
XES: Me.
-----
XES: Our services are available to assist in the eradication of the indicated groups.
Israel: We are going to use the International Police, but thankx.
XES: History has shown that they have a tendency to be ineffective. We are very efficient.
Israel: Give me some proof and I will back you up (on paper)
-----
XES: Tell them about the PROOF (I sense some frustration here)
-----
XES: Ask: Cargo helicopters? Attack helicopters?
Israel: No, we are not trying to badger the US, we are their friend.
XES: It's not badgering. It's determining how much cargo each chopper could hold.
-----
XES: Tell everyone to stop hating.
Israel: In what way.
XES: The US is just trying to attack people and not stay on topic.
My girls really enjoyed the Far East competitions. Ellen was in band and Karyn in drama. It's a big plus for kids living in the Far East! Of course, there _was_ that one time that Guam had a typhoon and Karyn couldn't come home for several days. Bob was on a trip as well (to the mainland) & they ended up meeting in Narita and came home on the same plane. Fun times to remember!....gk
ReplyDeleteGlad he's no longer playing as the DPRK, as they are definitely the losers. We could use a good NGO for humanitarian assistance, but I don't think XES is the right fit. Can't wait to see what my ties look like now.
ReplyDeleteYou are one very resourceful lady to think about going to Starbucks and getting those ties tied!
ReplyDeleteI like how he uses words like eradicate, ineffective, efficient, and unreasonable. All those dinner conversations with his intolerable parents are finally paying off!
